That is true of what literally happened but I think the real meaning behind this is
Love is losing structure in our society.
A couple that met 100 years would not have turned out this way at all.
Neither of them are ever -bad- people they’re just confused to different degrees.
People are exposed to so much more now and end up living in their own dream state where everything can be rationalized

The point of view person wants to call the cop and gets out of the car to get a signal. She gets the gun out of the glove box and shoots him.
